I'm not working on the Linguaphone much at the moment since I want to reinforce the alphabet first. I'm probably going to go over all three alphabet books again. The trouble is that I haven't got much time and I've been trying to improve my French, Portuguese and Italian.

P.S. Mine was a gift but it's not worth the money. Get Assimil instead.

If you keep an eye on ebay, you should be able to find an older Linguaphone cassette course for about the price of a new Assimil course (never see the Arabic course used). I haven't used Assimil Arabic, so I can't offer a useful comparison. In one of Ardaschir's posts (last one on first page), he says he prefers Linguaphone's Arabic course to Assimil, but doesn't say why.

I forgot about eBay. If you are going to go for it, make sure that it's the ten cassette/CD version, not the short course with 4 cassettes.

Hm, it sounds like they are both good courses. Thank you very much for mentioning Assimil - I wouldn't have known about the course otherwise, and I think because if price I'm going to go with it. I was considering supplementing it with Mastering Arabic or Teach Yourself Arabic. We'll see...

I have Assimil's Arabic course. I'm going to learn from that next, while I continue to learn colloquial with my friends at the same time. I really like Assimil's courses. :)

I'm not sure how much help these would be when you're going through Assimil or Linguaphone, especially since you have access to native speakers.

Actually, besides my friend and her parents, I don't know any native speakers. I live in a small town... Would that change how useful other books would be to me?

Sorry for bombarding you with so many questions.

In that case, I suggest that you spend a great deal of time speaking with them!

I doubt that it's smaller than Gibraltar but, to answer your question, no. The usefulness of a book doesn't depend on where you live but simply on how much you already know when using it and how much you can get out of it. I think that with Assimil and Linguaphone you'd learn a great deal and it would be unnecessary to then do a TY or Mastering course. If you were doing it the other way around, however, then I would imagine that it would be a more efficient use of resources. In any case, after you've finished whatever course you choose, get onto native materials ASAP.

That's OK. The best way to learn is to ask. Actually, we should probably apologize to vinz for hijacking his thread!
