ok today i've finished unit 2 of module one of FSI
listening to many chinesepod ( maybe 5 ) because i have to take the train so not really easy to write in a bus , even if with my laptop i was able to see the character and so try to memorize them as i still listen to the first 50 newbie pod cast of chinesepod i will know begin elementary podcast because know I'm able to understand the newbie dialogue after to listen ( ok i just need to see some specific new word , but i'm able to write the transcript correctly on my laptop just by listening too the podcast , ok as they speak slowly loudly and as they just make basic sentence so it's not something difficult ) so i will continue to work in parallel with FSI and chinesepod in few days i will take a big sheet of paper to write all the 800 basic characters i must know to do the HSK test and also a big sheet of paper with words which are made of these 800 basic characters ( because i think it's not something usefull to jut know the characters even if most of them are also words ^^) 1 person has voted this message useful | |

ok today was reviewing time , i've beginning to list all the vocabulary i've already seen , for the moment my list contain 165 words , but i've not finished ( i think i've done half of my listing job, wow i seen so much vocabulary ! and i just list those which are contain on the HSK basic list )
after finish that i will do the same thing for the characters and after i will reviewing them all ( i think for the moment i've already seen 30% of what is needed for the HSK but i just know perfectly 8/12 % for the moment) , and review all the chinesepod's podcast , i think that will take one week so let's go 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Finish to list all the word i've already seen and for which i know the translation
423 words , of course i've erase those which i think i won't use a lot ok so i'm nearer of what is expected for the HSK than expected ( 45 % instead of the 30 expected ) for the moment i know perfectly ( i mean , with just either the 汉字 or pinyin or translation with no context , be able to find the translation / pinyin / and how to write it ) 50 /60 word in a chinese text i'm able to remeber the meaning of 90 % of them , more difficult to remember also the pinyin , that comes from the fact that i have more text ressources than audio one i've also find a lots of ressources on the internet how to write 汉字 there you put a 汉字 and you see how to write it ( very very useful for me ^^) http://quizlet.com to learn vocabulary ( available also for other languages) http://comet.cls.yale.edu/chineseusagedictionary/ just find it, but it seams that could be helpful grammar to have some explanation about chinese grammar read chinese texts to have some beginners / intermediate text to read , write with traditional character, interresting but why are the stories so short ^^ one of my friends has also given me the pimsleur for mandarin i've already finish pimsleur's unit 1 i've finish module1 of FSI and i'm currently on unit 2 of module2 for chinese pod i've beginning elementary lesson, good choice i think because the level of the vocabulary is not yet to high but the speed of speech is more "normal" and the sentence are more complex and dialogue seems more "natural" ( i mean that in the newbie level we can learn many sentence but just the introduction sentence, so you are aible to begin chatting but you can't go further ) sill motivated, my chinese friends are really impressed by my progress ( one month and a half ago 我一点都不会说普通话^^ ） but i think i must have a stric learning plan because for the moment i do one thing , and another but i think it's not enough structured , i will have to think about that ) because my reading skills are too high compare to my speaking skills , and i also need more sentence pattern i think Edited by Baudelaire on 22 March 2008 at 8:59am 1 person has voted this message useful | |

ok yesterday finish
unit 1/2/3 of pimsleur and today unit 4/5/6/7 i definitely don't learn any word in pimsleur's lessons but nevermind, i've improved ( i hope ^^) a lot my oral skill and i've learn many patterns , which is the thing i need the more ,with pronunciation . i've read some of basic text , they were written with traditional character but for most of them i was able to make the link with the simplified one (they don't give the traditional way in Chinesepod and i still not found how to write fastly traditional character on my computer , so i don't inclued them in my learning programms) when reading the text i also find that i was able to understand the meaning of some unknow characters regarding to how they were construct. learning chinese begins to be really interesting edit : ok i've find how to frind traditional character , just a little button to change on my linux system .... damn why i've not found it before .... okay , this last days exams + reviewing lessons + friends who invite me = not so many time to learn chinese , ok but i used to find little piece of time to review my vocabulary
now when people chat with me on MSN / QQ i immediately find the meaning of their sentences if it's basic one or little complex using even if one words is not in my vocabulary list ( sentence with 2 verbs , and less than 15 characters, i'm not so good ^^ ) today i used to have more time finish 8/9/10 of Pimsleur , review vocabulary view blog of some of people of my school who are already in china , reading what they write about the difference between china /france . It was interesting and now i really want to go china now 我要现在去中国 ！ 我要看北京和长城 ！ i also begin to identy the sound when people are talking even if i don't match the meaning , i'm able (if i listen several time of course ) to write down what they say ( after my computer help me to find which word it was and so the meaning of the dialog ) really rewarding chinese is not a mysterious and meaningless sound anymore for me i think it's why learning chinese it's so rewarding , because as you begin from scratch , and they're no link with french / English / German you have to built your knowledge step by step 我在很累所以要现在去睡觉。 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Just thought I'd stop by with a little word of encouragement. Mandarin is on my list of languages I'd like to learn *someday*. It sounds like you are really making some progress, good luck with your studies!

ok this last day i've used to have not really so much time to practise pimsleur and so on but better ,
the chinese students who used to be present in my engineer school , as they went on internship in all part of France , used to invite me and an other french student ( him because he was the one , as he's one year higher than me , me it's my first year , who where there when they arrived in France and who help then in the first time , and me maybe because i'm really get interresed in their culture and because in 2 month i've made some progress ) I was really honored because i just know 3 ( and just for 3 month ) of the 8 student who invite us , and they treated me like if 我是他们很朋友. they cooked for us ( really good food 他们采很好吃了. we used to chat ( they mainly speak in chinese so i was only able to catch some words / meaning there and there , btw it was much more than my french friend who don't catch anything ^^ ) they were really impressed when they show me writing 汉子 ^^ and much more when they see that i can recognise traditional character , what if i was really good ( in fact i was just able to say some basic sentence and to write just few characters but for them it was like i was able to speak as a native ^^ ) 这个晚会很好了，and the day after we used to have an open day for our school , so as it was their last day in my school i spent all my time with them , but this time i was the only french , and is i'm 1.90 meter high , blond hair , blue-eyed man that was somewhat fun to go eat in macdonal with them now their left and as i've also finished my exam today now i can continue pimsleur i've done unit 11 now time to go bed ps : ok after catching a conversation between my parents , it seems that my dream to go to china to study in 1 year and a half and finish my engineer degree in the middle's empire is going to be more and more true , hope it would finaly be really true 1 person has voted this message useful | |

A long time without posting
i think i finally find a somewhat good learning method each day 1 or 2 unit of pimsleur ( for oral ) 1 chinespod ( i'm now intermediate level, cause the elementary's sentences were not enough complex any more ) ( for hearing / learning idiomatic expression ) reading some of the MIT lessons ( for grammar ) 1 or more session of flashcard ( using the software ZDT -> really really good one ) chatting with my chinese friends yesterday i've test again how many characters i know , now my method is more stable i've made some good improvement i know by heart between 150 and 175 words ( how to write and so on ....) and i'm able to recognise approximatively 600 words so lets continue 1 person has voted this message useful |
