I would be circumspect if your spoken Spanish is important to you. The tendency to mix in Italian words when speaking Spanish is difficult to avoid. Whenever I hear someone who speaks both languages as second languages they invariably mix the two at least a little bit.

However, if spoken Spanish is not as important, it will be a huge boon to learn Italian. It will increase your overall "pan-romance" vocabulary from a passive standpoint. When writing, you can simply use spell-check to eliminate any mixing.

Jfc if you already speak Spanish the best way to avoid mixing the two languages, maybe is learning Italian with a course for Spanish speaking people like this

That is what I did. I studied Spanish for three years in school, two classes a week. A couple of years later I took up Italian. What happened was that I sometimes mixed up the languages, but you live in the US and maybe you get to talk to Spanish-speaking persons in your everyday life? Then it can probably be easier to distinguish the languages. There are so many examples of similar words. You will probably not meet so many (if any) native speakers of Italian in the US. Do you have time to take classes? Otherwise, read a lot. Newspapers on the web, novels etc.
