a question: how early in the learning process can one begin L-R? I.e., is this appropriate for a rank beginner just starting out in a language. or should one complete some structured (e.g., assimil) study first, then embark on L-R? |

Opinions vary. I've been using it as a rank beginner in Polish, and I've found that I like this approach. There's no real harm in trying, as far as I can see, as long as you're willing to try something else if you find it's not how you want to do the earliest stages of your study.

I should give that a try as well. About how well were you understanding individual words before doing this - how many were you understanding/not understanding?

I can only say for one chapter. For the chapter that I have done (and the book in general) I was able to understand about 75% of the words before the active phase. After working and digging through the dictionary, native text, and working on words that I didn't have a feeling for I got at least 95% of the words in the first chapter I worked on. Since I've read the LR-ed the book 4 times I found no need to listen to the audio. After reading so many times it kind of plays (the voice, intonation, everything) in your head while you read solely in L2. From here on out it seems like a replay of Assimil.
Lately I've been busy but I'll try to hack away a chapter a day and see what happens after a month or so and keep you guys posted. I'm sure there are people on this forum who have gone further but just haven't said anything yet. It'd be nice to hear from them too.
