My thoughts
I will try to study as much German and Esperanto as possible starting April 1. Previously I had mentioned in average 8 hours a day but I thought it might be wise to rephrase that to avoid burning out. My short-term goals (until August 31) German - Acquire basic fluency Esperanto - Passing the meza ekzameno (about equivalent to basic fluency) Resources I'm using for German Deutsche Welle's German courses - Deutsche Welle offers different German courses from beginner to advanced levels Deutsche Welle's podcasts - An excellent collection of different podcasts in German Deutsche Welle's video on demand - Watch the recent episodes of different German TV programs for free Tagesschau - The most popular TV newscast in Germany Schlaflos in München - An interesting and fun podcast about the life of Annik from München Resources I'm using for Esperanto Lernu! - An excellent website with loads of courses from beginner to advanced levels Radio Verda - An interesting podcast in Esperanto eLibrejo - A collection of literature in Esperanto Esperanta Literaturo - Another collection of literature in Esperanto Edited by Ingemar on 24 March 2008 at 5:42am 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Day -18
A pretty decent day, I spent about 1 hour on each language. About 1 hour of Esperanto: - Reviewed some vocabulary - Reread chapters 1 and 2 of Gerda malaperis - Did lesson 2 of Jen nia IJK - Listened to Radio Verda (10 minutes) About 1 hour of German: - Listened to Fokus Amerika, Fokus Asien and Radio Schweden (40 minutes) - Listened to Schlaflos in München (5 minutes) - Watched Tagesschau (15 minutes) My biggest problem with German so far is when someone speaks very fast, such as Annik in Schlaflos in München. I really need to stay very focused all the time to make out all the words and even then I sometimes have a hard time. I'll try to do some L-R in German tomorrow and see if that might help. Hello Ingemar, I just wanted to welcome you to the forum. It's great to see another Swede here. I really like German and Esperanto (although the latter is hibernating right now).

Hello Jeff and thanks for the friendly welcome. I'm thinking of studying computational linguistics (språkteknologiprogrammet) at Uppsala university. From what I've read about it, it seems pretty interesting. I do like programming and I'm reading An Introduction to Language by Fromkin and Rodman at the moment to get a general idea of linguistics. You don't happen to have any knowledge of it? I'm mostly into languages to being able to read literature and travel. Sorry, I'm not familiar with Fromkin/Rodman.
Indeed, Kafka is one of those authors whose work I want to be able to enjoy in the original language (who knows, maybe this year?). Going back to your log, I see that you've studied Esperanto using Lernu.net - I too did that (as part of the six week challenge about a year ago). As far as I got, I liked it very much, and am pretty sure that it'll help you reach your goals. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Day -17
This is more like it. I got a bit more than 3 hours of language learning done today. About 90 minutes of Esperanto: - Reviewed some vocabulary and the correlatives - Reread chapters 3 and 4 of Gerda malaperis - Did lessons 3 and 4 of Jen nia IJK - Listened to Radio Verda (20 minutes) - Did a few grammar excercises related to affixes About 95 minutes of German: - 50 minutes L-R of Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen (Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone) - Listened to Fokus Amerika (15 minutes) - Listened to Schlaflos in München (15 minutes) - Watched Tagesschau (15 minutes) My current problem with Esperanto seems to be the affixes. I have a decent passive understanding of them but using them actively is giving me a hard time. I used to have this problem with the correlatives as well, but I've got a pretty good grasp of those by now. I guess I'll just have to focus on a few grammar exercises for a while. Has anyone got any advice related to learning affixes? I had previously tried to L-R the first chapter of the first Harry Potter book and decided to continue. After 50 minutes of L-R I grew a bit impatient and listened to Schlaflos in München instead. A bit to my surprise, I had an easier time picking out words than usual. Day -16
Today was heavily biased towards German, but I still got pretty much Esperanto done as well. About 100 minutes of Esperanto: - Reviewed some vocabulary - Reread chapters 5, 6 and 7 of Gerda malaperis - Did lessons 5 and 6 of Jen nia IJK - Listened to Radio Verda (10 minutes) - Did the baza ekzameno About 4 hours and 20 minutes of German: - 3 hours L-R of Harry Potter und der Stein der Weisen - Reviewed some grammar - Listened to Schlaflos in München (20 minutes) - Watched In 115 Tagen um die Welt (20 minutes) - Watched Tagesschau (15 minutes) I decided to give the baza ekzameno (basic exam) in Esperanto a try and failed it by one point... Day -15
I was planning on doing a bit of L-R as well but I'm way too tired at the moment. Still managed to study for a bit more than 2 hours though. About 1 hour of Esperanto: - Reviewed some vocabulary - Reread chapters 8 and 9 of Gerda malaperis - Did lessons 7 and 8 of Jen nia IJK - Listened to Radio Verda (10 minutes) About 75 minutes of German: - Listened to Fokus Asien, Fokus Europa and Radio Schweden (1 hour) - Watched Tagesschau (15 minutes) Edited by Ingemar on 18 March 2008 at 9:05am 1 person has voted this message useful |
