I can attest to using telenovelas. After mastering all indicative tenses and introducing myself to the subjunctive, I began watching them and it basically taught me everything there is to know about the conjugations and use of the subjunctive.

I'm still new to the whole thing but I watch the telenovela episodes in sections, usually of about fifteen minutes each (which is usually when they tend to insert commercials). If I try to watch the entire thing at once it tends to get frustrating. The first time around I just try to catch the general idea of what is going on and what the topics of coversations are. I watch the same telenovela every day so the first few days were spent figuring out who was who and what their relationships were. Now I can focus on the topics of the specific episodes. When I finish my first run through of an episode and have a general idea of what's going on, I go back and watch it again. Now I'm able to focus more on the specific words and phrases used. This is when I really feel like I'm learning something from the process. If there's a word that is used a lot but that I'm not quite sure of the meaning of, I might pause the show for a moment to look it up. I try not to do this a lot, though, and try to just pick out what I can from context. I don't use subtitles, personally. I record the telenovelas off the television so I don't think there are English subtitles and if there were I think I would still avoid them since I try to work with as little English as possible and to immerse myself in the Spanish. I tried the Spanish subtitles, but I couldn't read them fast enough and I found it took my attention away from the way the spoken language sounds, so I'm avoiding them for now. I might use them again later when I want to focus more on reading. I don't think it's necessary to master every episode. A lot of things are repeated in subsequent episodes. For me, two or three times through is enough.
