Recently I decided to finally begin something I've wanted to do for a very long time: learn a new language! I call this my first new language, although that's not entirely true since.. well I'm writing this in English and I'm Norwegian. English is like the unofficial second language of Norway anyhow so I'm not counting it.
After giving it some thought, considering usefulness, coolness, availability of material and checking the difficulty of various languages I decided to learn Spanish! It's a language spoken by a whole lot of people, it's based upon some of the same framework as English and Norweigan so I get some for free there. It's also an "easy" language, and it gives me an easy access pass to French and Italian - two languages I'm dreaming of learning sooner or later.
Why write a journal? Well, since it's my first time I'm obviously going to get stuck from time to time, and it would be great to have a place to ask for help. Also, when I write this journal I feel that I "commit myself" to it much more, so it will be harder for me to quit when I'm demoralised. :P
So, what have I done so far? Other than a few basic sentences (las patatas bailan muy bien and Luke, soy su padre) I didn't know much to start with so I aquired the basic Spanish pimsleur course. It's nice, but it's quite slow so I've begun trying some other material as well. I have begun the FSI Spanish basic course, and I will continue on that later tonight. I will also be checking out Michel Thomas' Spanish course.
Let's get to it! ;)
*points to future self reading this in a year or so* "You better be good at Spanish by now!"
