It is all so very true!

It's strange how all my difficulties with Arabic can be disheartening at times and inspirational at others. Strange yet fitting at the same time.

Arabic music is what keeps me going sometimes. ;) Who doesn't love a good Arabic pop song?

Good point. I think Arabic is not particularly difficult. What makes it difficult is that there's no such thing as "standard Arabic". Therefore, when a student wants to master the language, he is confronted with classical Arabic and a dozen of regional "varieties" (different languages, actually) at the same time his teacher pretends that all those highly differentiated languages are in fact the one and only "standard Arabic". The best option is to pick up a specific "dialect" (egyptian, iraqi, etc.) and stick to it until you learn it. Then you can move on to other "dialect" if you wish...

I don't want to sound too discouraging but it will be very hard! Nevertheless, there are plenty of resources available for Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), e.g. Assimil, Linguaphone, etc although not so many for the dialects (although there is FSI).

Actually, I've found there are quite a few resources available for the dialects. They just aren't put out by the major course publishers, but rather by universities. Here are a few examples from my bookmarks (I'm sure there are more):

Oh come on, it's not that hard. A word of advice, though: get a tutor. Don't attempt it alone.
