This article is so true.
I think Mandarin is a breeze compared to Arabic. The short time I studied Arabic was full of frustration and the feeling that I didn't improve no matter how hard I was trying...

Oh come on, it's not that hard. A word of advice, though: get a tutor. Don't attempt it alone. |

If it's not that hard why not attempt it alone? ;-)

When I see "very hard" I think very hard. Very hard means even with a tutor, it's near hopeless. :)

I've heard studying Arabic described as pursuing a reluctant lover, who will not give "herself" up until after years of courtship. Yes years in most cases. But most have found it well worth it.

I don't know much about the author of this article, but please keep in mind what most people say about language learning ("Oh my god, German IS LIKE THE HARDEST EVER and HOW DID YOU LEARN IT" etcetc).
The very little experience I've had with Arabic leads me to believe that, yes, it's different but it's not something that should take years to learn. It all depends on how commited you are and how much you practice.
From what it sounds like, this guy takes ONE two-hour class a week and is know whining about how hard it is. Hopefully, any potential students of Arabic will do more than take one puny class and should find it much easier than this poor chap prophesized it would be.
His method of learning is inefficient. One, it's a class. I think most of us are of the opinion that classes alone do not work. Second, how the damn does he think he's going to improve if all he studies are a few phrases and a bunch of grammar?
Maybe Arabic is hard, maybe it's not but don't get discouraged or judge the whole language based on what a bozo like this says.
Just my two cents, as usual and feel free to dispute it.

Just the word "trying" says it all.. It means he will not learn Arabic any time soon.I didn't even read the article yet,but the title is enough to tell me it will be a negative one.
