It's nice to know that there are other runners out there. I tend to train solo, so I do talk to myself or the dog. I think my neighbors think I am nuts!
Do you find that at a certain level of a workout that you find it difficult to process or forget more easily? I find I can switch between languages with minimal problems during a lite workout, but when I am nearing the two hour mark or doing anything intense then I have problems following along with my audio of choice--even the mind numbing Pimsleur lessons I have listened to a few times.
BTW I have heard that the MCM is very cool. I wish it had a decent soft shoulder so I could run it--cement kills me!
Good luck with your training!

When I was training alone in Memphis this summer, I tried to do some pimsleur russian tapes but found they drove me crazy during the run. Just something about running and pimsleur didn't allow me to focus. I couldn't process anything. But the second the run ends, it's fine. It was almost as if I would start tripping on the ground the second I started Pimsleur, perhaps a testament to the focus required for it??
MCM should be a fun race. I've been practicing the course with the team. It's pretty hilly (DC is a surprisingly hilly city- especially coming from Memphis!). The course runs by Georgetown a few times, so I'm going to try to force my hungover friends out of their beds on a Sunday morning and come cheer me on. Perhaps in Russian??? :-)

Same here, I can't focus on Pimsleur while running, I don't know why? I usually just stick to conversing verbally with
a teammate...Or talking to myself! :)

I'm not a runner by any means, but I was doing Prof. Arguelles' shadowing method with language while walking in the mornings and it was great. Then the weather started getting bad, I had a cold and well, that's something I've been meaning to get back into. There's something about having the elements -- sun, wind, air -- hitting you while hearing your target language. Having all that going on at once increases my brain power for the day. It was more stimulating than a cup of coffee -- and I love coffee (!) The problem is I have to be out of the house at 7:30 three days out of the week. I'd get up earlier but Germany is not exactly pleasant weather this time of the year. Cold, foggy and damp!
I like stories or short dialogues the best. I can't do those rote phrases. I need something with a little bit more substance.
I think running/walking is the best excercise to combine with language learning. Any other forms of working out would be too distracting, but who knows. I've tried riding my bike, but I live in the city and I have to get to the to the bike trails before I can put the earphones on ;-). Again, the weather is bad right now.

Are there any suggestions of products to use whilst running aside from Pimsleur (which I am currently using daily). I run 8 - 12 km / d and always use the time either studying Pimsleur or Listerning to a Teaching Company lecture. Am finishing off all of my Pimsleur programs now. I tried using the Michel Thomas method whilst running but the need to pause and think out answers made it too difficult.
I am looking for learning resources that I can mentally process whilst running and that the individual "lessons" or "podcasts" don't last for more than 30 minutes - 1 hour.
Any other suggestions?
Dr. Fel

I used to be a triathlete, but am now only a cyclist. I absolutely hate to try to study while working out. It reduces
the effectiveness of both activities dramatically for me. On the other hand, it does save time. If one is limited for
time, she might consider listening only activities.

I like counting in different languages while at the Gym, but that's just so It's so I'm distracted enough to suffer through the pain. There is something about doing to the at the same time that seems like the ultimate in self improvement, however I think people might start thinking I'm a little touched in the head if I start mumbling to myself in German.

Normally I am a runner but I've taken a temorary sabatical due to being a lazy bas..... I trained for a marathon last year and finished in 3:43. Not a great time, at least I beat the people in costumes. I've not done much running since then but after seeing this I may well start again tommorow. I don't listen to language material though. I need something with a beat to run to.
