I also agree the USA has more advantages as it is multi cultural..but when I am in Denmark..what does my Girls Family watch..2 and a half men..Dr.Phil..Oprah..I stay in another room and watch Danish tv..Her dad also tells me about the latest Will Smith movie he wants to watch with me..and Han forstor inte that I will not watch this..
I only watched Scandanavia programs..i was not trying to learn the language yet..i wanted to see a different culture.. If i lived outside the USA and wanted Japanese i would watch japanese tv on the internet and japanese movies on the internet..i would speak my Japanese words in Norway..I would disect japan movies on the internet..i think you can get Norway subtitles on all movies from the Pirate bay downloads but I am not saying to do that.. A friend of mine will burn a movie from the pirate bay and you can choose your subtitles.. It is harder outside the USA..Sorry about the Rosetta stone comments..I should say it is not necessary to use this in most countries 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

You still sound a little contradictory. I'm not trying to attack you but I gotta say you're coming on a little strong. Your title posts "how I learned Spanish in 4 months" "programs stop your fluency" are such blanket statements. You don't need such infomercial sounding tags to get people to read your post. Also, you're forgetting I think that there are many here who know more than 5 or even 10 languages. "Living in the language" is nothing new. I'm glad for your success, but you haven't discovered anything new. These "EXTRA, EXTRA, Read all about it: Rosetta Stone Sucks" posts are unneccessary, and, were you to search former posts rather redundant. When you use your "nonmethod-method" on many different languages and it works you won't have to advertise it to us, we'll find you (much like the Moses McCormick phenomenon that swept the board in a polarizing debate). If you really want to help, look at the 20 Suggestions for Learning A Language post, actually SEE if some of the suggestions you have haven't been posted and then add them to the list. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I'm watching Japanese Anime series right now, and currently downloading two Japanese series without subtitles (one that I already have with subtitles). That is one way to do it. ;)
Still, I like the Rosetta Stone approach also. I think this in combination with your method of dissecting entertainment in the language is the best. It's like if I was a 1 year old kid. I would learn some language by my parents pointing at a chair and saying "chair", and I would learn more language by watching a kid's movie even though I didn't understand everything. Perhaps I should get some children's movies in Japanese, teletubby-complexity. Hm. That's awfully boring though. ;p 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Sorry to sound that way Ashley ..LIngq as i said has great real conversations..but i would only use their real long intermediate conversations ..I would not use them to learn a language only to listen to their radio broadcasts.. I know I have not discovered anything new..see page 4 of the Spanish in 4 months i posted.. Gouin showed everyone how to speak a foreign language in 8 montha and that was 100 years ago and it is available free to read and I put the link!..
Sorry if i sounded like a commercial..I costantly say anyone can do it..I did not say Rosetta stone sucked.. In America the guy was selling Rosetta Stone on a big cart with all the languages from inside Grand central terminal today with other vendors..he showed me how it worked.that is the only reason I really know anything about it.. But right behind him is a public bathroom with a picture of a toilet with the words Banos in Spanish and Bathrooms in English..to me the bathroom wall was all the Rosetta stone i needed and unlike Rosetta stone it was free Also I asked him to show me Svenska..he showed me a little girl on a screen and then he keep trying to say Flicka..until the program let him go on.. I have heard the word flicka maybe 50 times in one week from my Svenska movies example Pratar med min flicka om du ar dod! .. Please do not judge my Svenska it may be wrong i am just learning this language for 2 weeks.. I learned flicka and never forget it from disecting movies because in one scene A guy was on the floor getting threatned if he spoke to another guys girl..even my little sister learned the word without subtitles As I said..the only language program I would seriously use is the free FSI.. Ock... Ja.. jag tycker the lite gammel lady har teaches Svenska on FSI .. * I have no language training at all i am sure all in this forum know more than i do* I have not used Spanish in 3 years so this may have some wrong grammer..pero estoy feliz i can escribe sin pensando Gouin taught I see the acorn.. i see it blosom.. i see the leaves.. i see a flower in his series method I was doing the same thing in Spanish in the clubs.. from day 1 You want to dance &nb sp; Quiere Bailar you want something to drink quiere algo a beber you want something to eat quiere algo a comer you want to go to my place vengamos por mi casa despues de fiesta I do not wait i just live as a native from day 1 Edited by healing332 on 09 July 2009 at 4:20am 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Remember you are not watching the movie to understand the words..you are learning the words..the sounds..you are hanging on the words and enjoying the movie..you may understand only 5 words in a 90 minute movie..you are not trying to understand the words..you are hearing the words and watching the action..after a time you will start hearing the and understand ing more words..then sentences..the paragraphs..it will slowly reveal it is to you..
also bring the subtitles back when ever you want for clarity..love the words..in the new language..remember you will NOT understand the movie you are breaking it down and disecting..it and playing with the words..if a movie is boring change it out quickly..you must love the words...sorry i did not say this earlier..Do not stop.. slowly you will understand more words with trying..You are NOT suppose to understand the words.. take care 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I see you go for communication over accuracy. Can you talk about other subjects or just about getting laid? How do you go about building up the necessary vocabulary to be considered 'fluent'? 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Also, if you have not used Spanish in 3 YEARS why the HECK are you on here telling people you learned it in 4 months like it was yesterday. Obviously it doesn't last long either. And why haven't you been using it if Spanish is everywhere? Someone with fluency USUALLY doesn't have to make a disclaimer on grammar.

You come across as quite hostile, Ashley.
How does his experience being a while ago make it less interesting a read for the rest of us? Any language not being used in three years will also become quite rusty, that becomes quite clear after reading through the topic around here somewhere about just that. He never claimed written fluency, only spoken, and he never defined what level of fluency. Why so hostile? 1 person has voted this message useful |
