Spanish was easy "for me" and i think in the USA it is incredibly easy..Spanish is everywhere..even the most famous classic movie in USA is Casa-Blanca..City in California? "Los angeles".. Texas ? "El Paso" "San Antonio"..I can use Spanish anytime in my sleep and I do not even use it anymore..ANYONE can do this..but Spanish in the USA is everywhere..Even when my Scandanavia girl came here(USA) for the 1st time she playfully asked is this the USA or Spain? They even say don't live in Florida unless you know Spanish.
My vocabulary comes from reading..I read for Day 1 JUST READ..even Kato Lomb said this! i was reading the Spanish paper people use to laugh at me and say you do not even understand what you are reading..just read..the brain is an incredible lazy genius.. People think ..i will understand then read I do it the other way ..I read and then you undertand..I have no idea why this works but it does! Jag vet inte varfor this works men it does How am i knowing all these Scandanavian words that I have been using in my post..it is from reading.. Nice discovery below I have discovered that a portable dvd has increased my understanding in my new language. "I watched Kyss by Vinter" last natt and I will now be using a little portable dvd player ($29 dollars in USA) to watch all my movies when possible..I used one for the first time last night and understood more than 3 times than normal!....i turn off the lights and use this little dvd player right on my stomach and watch the movie in bed..i picked up more words than ever..also use some nice headphones and you are locked into the movie..it blocked all other sounds.. Why this may have worked I believe it is an increased focus on the brain and the headphones may activate right brain-left brain which science shows increases learning! I was catching the Hur..Har..ja..jag..mor..so easy with the headphones! as oppose to a regular dvd player in the bedroom this is a great discovery for me...i hear even the fast speech so much easier.it also focuses you on the screen better and draws me into the story..it is more concentrated way to watch the movie..very nice! Think of a circle..i hit the brain in a continual circle..I start my day speaking my language to everyone from day 1..then i hit the brain with my reading morning paper on my commute..i talk my language at work mixed with my English..i read on the way home a novel in the new language...i disect my movies at night..i barely have a conversation without sprinkling in my new language...I do not give my brain a break..i do this in a fun way for me..i live as native.. Throw in a free FSI course and i think you are there!

I think those studying Japanese are very fortunate..there are so many great movies..The Audtion..Tokyo Masala..The whole Tokoyo shock series..which has dozens of modern movies with all relevent dialogue..Japan has great filmmakers
I would recommend "The Audition" Great for disecting and learning Japanese.. I do not know if you can get this In Norway though..for those in that country 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Following this typical day you can add new language subtitles to the new language dialogue! Example disect movie then after watching 2 times with English subtitles..watch 2 times with new language subs(no English at all)..you then the next 5 times over a week with no subs..feel free to add either subs at anytime just for plot and theme understanding..you can mix and match this as you like..Its a great brain shock.. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I'm not trying to be hostile. I'm just kind of put off by someone who is like "OH! This method, it totally works! You just have to LIVE in the language" and so on as though this is new. Especially if he hasn't even done these things in years and especially if he hasn't tried it in other langs. There are a lot of people here with methods they constantly improve and have learned many languages. I just don't like the way this guy comes in here on like his 8th post is like "oh it's simple, just do this!" and sounding all confident about it. I mean you never see some of these really gifted polyglots like Iversen writing posts like "I learned 15 languages in 2 years! Here's how!" and that would even make sense. If he were more modest about it and wrote in his own log about it then fine but this is shady and just to draw lots of attention. "Oh, I did this! Um, but it was two years ago, so, you know if I write in Spanish to you I might not SOUND like I know what I'm talking about. But I totally do so you should listen to me."
And I know he didn't say what KIND of fluency but you know, when you're going to be writing posts that boast you have any easy method to it then you really should specify. Many of us don't want to be just conversational in it. He should have said "learn conversation Spanish in 4 months" or something. By the way dude, your "lazy brain" was wrong about SVO, its Subject Verb Object so I hope to God that's not the same way it works when you try to learn a new lang. It's a classification of sentence structure in a language. Like how in some languages it's Dan hit the ball. And in others its Dan the ball hit (SOV) or even Hit the ball Dan (VOS) or some combination of this. Your method of sprinkling vocab into English sentences would be more difficult then. Also if there were noun declensions it would be more difficult. Like sometimes saying I am writing to a friend. "to a friend" is a completely different word and so on in this way. I've had favorable experiences with language courses. They are useful for obtaining some basic vocabulary and grammar. It is my opinion that courses are only a beginning - to master a language takes a much longer time.
The Pimsleur courses teach a limited vocabulary, but I think what they teach is useful, as long as you can live on a diet of wine and rib steaks :) I think Pimsleur also teaches the "polite" form so that the learner won't be too familiar with individuals that they should speak with in a formal manner. With intensive study I'm sure one could learn a language reasonably quickly, but for me it takes a long time to get to a point where I'm reasonably comfortable with a language. I still find words I don't know on a regular basis, so clearly my vocabulary is still somewhat lacking. 1 person has voted this message useful |
