My goodness, my budget for a year in South America was $3000. You'll have no problem. You could spend a week in the Dominican Republic, staying in hostels and eating cheaply, for $300, easily.

That was my thought, and what kind of fool spends $3000 when going on holidays for a week? Take the same amount of money, stretch it out and stay a month or more.:s

panhead, I agree with woodpecker. Take the ratio of the GDP's and multiply that by your $3000. That will give you a (very) rough idea of your spending power. $3000 is way too much for a week, but not enough for the whole summer for me. But it depends on how you want to live.
What your coworker might be referring to is the fact that some boneheads convert money and feel rich because of the huge amount of cash. Then they spend like crazy, and wonder how they could have run out of all that money so fast. A good way to avoid this is use an ATM, and only withdraw what you need.
