Since I first studied German, 3 years ago, I have frequently been mistaken for a German-speaker when I speak Italian. This seems somewhat natural: I don't sound particularly Italian, I've been told at times that I have an "Anglo-Saxon" accent, and German is the most widely spoken language in Switzerland. However, at lunch today, something more amusing happened.

I've been studying Dutch for the last several months, somewhat intermittently (my longest break was well over a month). I still don't sound Dutch in Dutch; while my attempts to speak it are no longer met with incomprehension, the reaction I recently provoked when I tried to say a few words in Dutch to a Dutch acquaintance was "you sound like an immigrant!"

I've been eating lunch semi-regularly at a restaurant near where I work; I speak Italian there, as does everyone else. Today, the newest waitress asked where I was from, and expressed great surprise over my reply: she told me that she had been sure that I was Dutch!
