I ordered a burrito by phone, in English, like I always do. I've never tried speaking Spanish at this taqueria, and they know my voice. All I did differently this time was order the burrito with carne asada instead of my usual grilled chicken, and the guy started speaking Spanish with me.

Okay, actually, this is the second time. Once I say carne asada, everything goes to Spanish. This last time, I even continued in English, and the guy kept speaking Spanish.

I guess I just say "carne asada" really well? Whatever, it's a dream come true for me.

That's so awesome. I'm still trying to work up the guts to say anything Spanish to the people around town, in fear that they'll start jabbering away in Spanish to me, and that I'll forget how to say that I don't know much.

Congrats, though, that's sweet!

A clear proof that one is better off chorusing "carne asada" 10,000 times than hanging out in the forum.

Keep it up and you'll have to carry a US passport or birth certificate on you all the time.

I just never thought grilled steak would have the power to change my life.

Enough Mexican food can help end it too.

That's awesome!

Unfortunately I've found myself losing my Spanish as I learn Japanese (not that there was much to begin with) and whenever someone speaks to me in Spanish I go into foreign-language-auto-pilot, which for me is Japanese. So my brother asked me "donde esta?" and I replied "wakarimasen!" (I don't know! I was lost)
