I agree. It is unwise to get hung up on the difficulty of foreign languages. There might be a broad consensus that at least for English speakers, Spanish is the easiest, yet people post sometimes questioning whether Spanish is so easy to learn (I think acquiring any L2 is inherently a difficult skill, requiring a lot of work).

I'd start with a related language like Dutch or Norwegian (but not German). The grammar and vocabulary of both are remarkably similar to English, but different enough to get you used to new concepts like gender, different phonology, higher inflection and different syntax. I found that after just an hour of studying dutch half-heartedly I could read and get the gist of many article in the Dutch Wikipedia.
