How long: it depends on your goals, time available, etc. General consensus seems to be that below 15minutes - 1h is probably a bad idea. Personally, I prefer a much higher intensity.
Flashcards are ok for learning vocabulary, but they're neither necessary nor sufficient for learning a language; if you try using them as your main tool, you'll probably end up very frustrated. What do you want to learn, in what timescale, for what purpose? Edit: it looks, reading your other posts, that you're looking to learn Finnish, at least partly for reading, and you're interested in making the reading more comprehensible. In that case, I consider a much better alternative to flashcards to be getting the same text in both Finnish and English; you can then compare sentences and figure out most of the vocabulary that way. It's much more pleasant than using a dictionary heavily. For active conversation, at this stage, there's a fair amount to be said for internalizing useful phrases; it sounds like you're doing that. Getting an idea of the grammar may be helpful, but probably shouldn't be your main focus; depending on your tastes, a textbook or reference grammar might be worth considering as supplementary tools.
