I don't have an exact number of essential words. Since I am Vietnamese learning
English and Chinese, I'd guest it is slightly larger than that of English but nothing
compare to Japanese. The Vietnamese vocabulary IS limited, as I've stated somewhere in
this forum: little prefixes/suffixes, no verb conjugations, no noun gender and number,
one word can act as many(sometime all) different parts of speech.
Regarding Vietnamese dictionaries, there are not many (good) ones, because of poppular
copyright violation. I'd recommend Lac Viet mtd at lacviet.com.vn.
