Oh, ok. Anyway, both ways of describing it are Eurocentric in a way.

Maybe we should use "Jack of all trades" instead. Except that it is sexist and slightly derogatory. But we can change it to "Jessie of all trades" or something ;p That's hilarious, uh ^_^

But you didn't answer the question Sennin! I'm bumping this up because I think it's interesting. Maybe people aren't reading the thread 'cos they also think it's about mathematics?!

I'm your typical jack of all trades, being a software engineer by education but keen to draw, sketch, do web design and what not. I'm also a dormant philosopher, which only serves to annoy people.

But I think it's very important to have a clear idea what is your primary thing in life. Polymathy and polyglottery can be both positive and negative, depending on how you handle them. If the different skills (be it linguistic or other) are mutually supportive, then it is clearly beneficial. On the other hand, if you fail to integrate all the various interests and endeavours, it's only chaos and waste of time (I think the proper term is "wanderlust").

Depending on the desired quality and the available resources, sometimes less is better and sometimes more is better ;p.

I don't think I really have a desire to be an expert in many fields though I am interested in many things; some of them overlap, e.g. psychology, languages and history. I also enjoy playing basketball, football (both kinds), cycling and dancing and these activities do not really overlap with the first three subjects, and I have not mastered any of them yet.

Sex is covered by "sport" and "playing a musical instrument". I can't believe you 're not aware of these trivialities. You better familiarize yourself quickly :p.
