Olympia's comment about speaking with the Mexican immigrants to the US was exactly the sort of thing I was hoping to hear about!

Likewise Julie's comments about Polish<>DE papers...

@Russianbear - haha, I look forward for the day when I can read what Russian papers have to say on the topic you mentioned. I agree that a "democracy" can engage in "spin" too (to use the polite word).

@IlH@n, The comparison between Turkish and German press was interesting. Not surprised that you find Euro papers take a condescending view. Hard for me to imagine what that feels like, but I can imagine it makes your blood boil!

Ignorance is bless. Some foreign friends came here, accomodated and stayed for some time. Looking from their perspective I started noticing problems that I never thought of before. I learned some strong sideos of myself too.

I can't say that there were a shock like with British media. Some things seem better than to a non-engaged person, some look uglier.

Well I tend to read a lot about the country of the language I'm studying and books from the country and that definitely broadens your worldview. For example I have noticed how much Spanish literature differs from Swedish
and English for that matter. I enjoy noticing those small cultural differences that I would probably have been
ignorant of if I hadn't been studying the language.

I practically hated France because of being forced to study their language against my will... As soon as I was no longer forced to study French (graduated from school) my feelings towards France warmed up quite a lot!

Well, when I was trying to decide on which language to learn, I spent a couple weeks learning the basics of Russian. I also subscribed to the RussiaToday Youtube channel and watch the videos daily. Seeing things from this Russian perspective has given me insight into events happening in that region that I would certainly not have heard about from the American media. I also watch all the interviews with Putin and frequently bring up events in Russian politics to my AP US Government class, thus earning the nickname "Comrade Louis!"

Well, it's certainly very fascinating being able to read/listen/speak in another language and it helps us realize that we all as humans have the same basic needs and desires. I'd say it has a very humanizing effect on me.
