Hi

One way I have of excercising my foreign language skills is to read the news online in the languages in question. For instance, I try to check out lemonde.fr as often as possible.

Now, I usually keep one tab open in Firefox with a dictionary website, flipping back and forth when I need some particular word translated. But today, it struck me how much easier it would be if I simply had an application that directly translated a highlighted word in the browser window. The translation might then appear in the status bar or whatever.

Does anyone know of any such application?

Yes, if you use Firefox (which you should anyway), there are several useful extensions available for this purpose.

There's one called gTranslate that uses Google's translating tool; just select the text, right click, select "translate", and the translation will pop up. This will just give you one word and isn't always reliable, but there are other extensions that will give you a whole standard dictionary entry.

Personally I like the simplicity of gTranslate, and at this point I can tell pretty easily if the translation doesn't make sense.
