I'm the same. I almost completely avoided writing in Spanish for the first couple of years. I probably do make a few more mistakes because of it, and I tend to avoid stuff I don't know rather than going and finding out how to say it, but I can hold down a fairly fluid conversation because I'm not thinking too much.
