Well, I'm finally pulling my finger out as it were and cracking down and learning Norwegian, I have a lot of free time of late due to a change in jobs and having moved to a rather remote area.

Well, I'm currently working my way slowly through the "Linguaphone Norsk Kurs" and am at lesson 11 of around 50 - so I'm far from finished and at my current progress of a unit every one or two days (I'm an inheritently lazy person) it'll be a while before I've completed it.

Even so, I've been trying my best to supplement my studies with other forms of practice - flashcards of commond verbs, listening to Norwegian music (So far I have only Lumsk and Pistgirobygget, if anyone can recommend some good bands it'd be appreciated) and speaking with my Norwegian friend via MSN.

So, hopefully having created this journal it'll spur me on to working harder at getting through this course, the little Pimsleur they do have for Norwegian and also the "Collquial Norwegian" course one I have.

Is that the course with two books and a few cassettes (possibly from the 1970s)? I found that in the "catacombs" of the local library, and when I have time I will have a closer look at it. Just for fun, to see if can understand it right away.

As for Norwegian music, I recommend Kari Rueslåtten.
(And certainly Dimmu Borgir, but only if you like such music..and I'm pretty sure if you do you know them anyway)

Good luck on your studies. I can relate to your laziness, and I've found if I do a little every single day, after about 3 or 4 weeks it becomes a habit and I find it easier to do. If I skip a day in the first couple of weeks, it becomes easier to skip another day, then another, and it is hard to start again. And it doesn't matter if I study for 15 mins. or an hour, as long as I do it everyday for the first few weeks to get that habit started. So once again, good luck on your studies, if you stick to it you will succeed.

The course is more than likely the one you found - it was first published in the 60's but these versions of the books are from 1982 - of which there are three (Explanatory notes; Vocabularies of the sound recordings and the hardback coursebook itself) and has four cassette tapes. A little annoyingly it uses the formal De in the recordings, but that only a small thing and barring that I have no real complaints it's been really useful so far.

Thanks for the recommendations and well wishing - right back at you. Aye, I'm not the biggest fan of black metal, but I a lot of Satyricon and Enslaved, some of which have songs in Norwegian but I'm not sure if learning via Black Metal would be too useful:

"Hei, er du norsk?"
"NEI, JEG ER IKKE NORSK, MEN JEG SNAKKER LITT!!"
"..."
"HVORDAN HAR DU DEEETTTTT?"
;)

Here are a couple of good Norwegian courses you might be interested in.

Teach Yourself Norwegian

This is one of the best courses in the Teach Yourself series.

Assimil (Norvégien sans peine/Norwegisch ohne Mühe)

This Assimil course is very good - lots of useful vocabulary at the intermediate level. Also strong on cultural information.

Hvordan har du det - How's it going? (Lit. How having you it?)

It was an attempt at a joke - in that Norwegian learnt via black metal could result in the speaker talking in the same way as the singer err... sings them. I'm sure there's a better way of putting that.

Cheers, my French isn't close to being good enough for the Assimil course, but hopefully I could run through it when/if it gets to a suitable standard for added material. I'll check out the Teach Yourself course :)
