I posted a recording of me reading a very short article in Japanese.
My first sound addition to this forum.
The article is entitled ヨット (yacht).
When I listen to it, I know I do not sound like a Japanese person. So I wonder why. Why do I sound different than a Japanese person? What must I change? What do I have to do to sound perfectly Japanese.
I wonder if anyone on this forum has any ideas.

Great text. UNICOM's JLPT Level 2 Reading Comprehension book is a source of so much excellent material, innit?
:-)
Actually, I find that you sound much better than the vast majority of native English speakers attempting to speak
Japanese. Points for improvement:
- Your [w] in [watashi] is completely English: way too much lip-protruding.
- Your [shi] is sometimes too English, as well: as in [kakushin]. Suprisingly, at times it sounds nearly perfect, as
in [kara sh*te].
- There was nothing Japanese about the word [kanuu]. Especially the [u:]. And you do have a tendency to
aspirate
your [k]s, etc. in other places as well.
But unfortunately, your prosody is completely off the pitch. Which is very surprising, considering that you are in
Japan. I have seen many foreigners succesfully picking up the right intonation patterns from just listening to the
world around them, the news... or other UNICOM's books! :-)))
Good luck.

Thank you for your comments.
I will listen to my recording again and with your points in mind.
The Japanized foreign words are the hardest ones for me to make sound Japanese.
Are you saying all [k] sounds in Japanese are unaspirated?
Yes, it's a good book. Unfortunately it doesn't come with a CD.
Maybe I should get one of those accent training books.
