Anyone found the website www.link-global.com? Topic-based conversational lessons, with very clear video clips and Chinese character graphics. A simple site with cheap lessons, really useful for backing up something like weekly Chinese lessons, or to use as a self-teaching tool, because you can use it whenever you want at home.

The Michel Thomas Mandarin course is quite good at teaching the tones, and it is loads cheaper than Pimsleur. Pimsleur is also good however.

Would ChinesePod take me to a good level of fluency in Mandarin?

I haven't done many of the lessons myself, but I assume that they cover a great deal of the language as regards "real" conversations, good topics and so on.

I started just learning spoken Chinese, I really didn't have the interest in learning writing and reading. At first I used Pimsleur and then Rosetta Stone (I also lived in China).

After a year and a half of learning oral Chinese (and Pinyin) I just decided that I needed to learn how to read and write. I think if you only want to learn how to speak then it's good that you don't have to feel the pressure to learn to read/write. Probably the interest will come naturaly. I found because I could already speak I learnt characters quite fast and after a year of studying characters I was probably at the level that I would be expected to be, self studying Chinese over a 2 and a half year period.

Good luck

My humble response to La Game's question is to use the FSI material. I started it this past December, though realize that it's not for everybody.
