I struggle tremendously with pronunciation; I just can't absorb it. How can I get better at the pronunciation? Is Michel Thomas Mandarin better than the Chinese Pimsleur? Also, as dumb as I may appear, I don't understand Pinyin...
Maybe Mandarin is beyond my capabilities. However, I only wish to learn the spoken language like La Game.

I became fluent before ever living in China (worked as an interpreter in the US). FSI is simply the best choice for your stated goals (all romanization, no characters). Although its content is far from deep, Pimsleur will give you a sort of headstrong confidence coming out of the gate, which is important for a language like Mandarin: a language that requires one to mow through mountains of material before you approach functional fluency.

For pronunciation and Pinyin...The pronunciation and romanization portion of the FSI Resource Module (http://www.fsi-language-courses.com/Chinese.aspx) may be helpful. It's also free. Good Luck.
