In Eastern europe it has something of an elitist image. The de facto "classical" languages are German and Russian :).

Don't forget that you need both French and Russian to read War and Peace in the original ;-)

What about Ancient Greek and Latin? Or even Old Church Slavonic for Eastern Orthodox countries? Aren't they even more "Classical"?

Of course, Ancient Greek and Latin are the real classical languages. However, there is also a very prominent literary tradition associated with Russian. German has a similar role and also a practical side to it, as it is one of the major languages in the EU.
I'm not exactly sure about the status of Old Church Slavonic. Technically speaking it is a classical language but with small significance outside of the Church.

Perhaps in Bulgaria (I know nothing about it), but certainly not in Poland.

Yes, sorry for the gross generalization. I don't know too much about Poland either.

As to the original question: French or Russian? I would choose Chinese, the dilemma would vanish. |

No it won't. If you don't believe me, refer to one of the Mandarin vs Japanese threads :). I think there are quite a few around.

I've read thousands of books both in Russian and French. As far as literature and movies are concerned (the only reasons I learn languages), I'd definitely choose Russian. |

You really gotta be a brooding egghead to dismiss French so easily, especially concerning movies and literature and especially so if you're doing it in favor of Russian. The French publish more and produce more movies. French offers more translations from other languages than any other language (German is a close second). French is the language of cartoons and comics.
Russian offers a great literature and a collection of great movies, but French wins whether you're an intellectual or simply looking for some fun.

Could you elaborate a bit more regarding this last sentence?
