Don't do French just because it is more logical; do what you want.
Also, there are cognates from Romance languages in Russian, so you may consider French first?

Hey Gogglehead,
So I see in your profile it shows you as studying Russian. Does that mean you made
your choice? I'd be interested in reading about your progress if you're willing to
share. I was studying Russian because I love the sound of it and it's so different
from anything I've studied before. I then put it on hold to focus more on French since
I had some grounding in it from high school. I still love Russian though and look
forward to studying it more in the future.

Hahaha so it does.
My profile has actually had that "fact" for some time now. I put it in there when I first began to study it, but I went no further than learning the alphabet. Most of which I have forgotten now anyway, so I'm more or less still on the starting block with both languages. Still don't know what to do. You say you put it on hold, how far did you get and how long did it take you. What did you use? There are so many options these days!

I didn't get very fall at all unfortunately. I did a little Pimsleur and also signed
up for a class. The class was fun but I had to quit after only a few classes due to
work. For what it's worth my teacher did think my pronunciation was pretty good for a
beginner. I'd attribute that to Pimsleur. Too bad they're so boring! :-)

You really gotta be a brooding egghead to dismiss French so easily, especially concerning movies and literature and especially so if you're doing it in favor of Russian. The French publish more and produce more movies. French offers more translations from other languages than any other language (German is a close second). French is the language of cartoons and comics.
Russian offers a great literature and a collection of great movies, but French wins whether you're an intellectual or simply looking for some fun. |

I strongly disagree with this. Russian literature is the pinnacle of the art. While there certainly is no shortage of gems in its repertoire, to equate France's literature to Russia's would be as egregious as to compare its music to Germany's.
France is a brilliant civilisation distinguishing itself in many things, but in each field of artistic or intellectual endeavor it usually falls short of at least one of its European or Western neighbors. You may be right that on the whole French has a lot to offer, but if you have a passion either for literature, art, music, science, philosophy or most humanities, there are more rewarding choices in each case.

I don't believe in absolute superiority of any literature. My initial comment was against dismissing French lightly. Someone who, by his own account, has read "thousands" of French books should know better.
As a package deal French has more to offer. Using Atama’s colorful amputation metaphor, Russian can be the arm, head or the soul and French “only” the leg of literature. It covers more ground, lol. Any serious literature lover with even a passing interest in foreign languages cannot avoid these two. A serious language learner with a passing interest in literature will look at both real hard. The Russians have many giants, the French have more continuity.

Thanks guys. OK, I chose Russian, I had already borrowed a TY book for it anyway. First I have to re-cap the alphabet...
