I'm a native speaker, and the choice of vocabulary is very unnatural in some of those phrases, so I wouldn't worry too much. For example- I also wrote 'benevolence', before trying 'beneficence' instead. And there are a couple on the university word lists that I haven't got a clue about! Like "they insp_____ the products before sending them to the stores" (apparently it's not "inspected") and "In a hom_____ class all of the students are of a similar proficiency"- I thought 'homogenous' but it seems like a very unnatural sentence.

Thanks Russianbear for posting the test, this is exactly what I hoped to find! I took it and got:
It's strange that I had two less correct answers, but apparently the my estimated vocabulary is 20 more words... I actually don't think that my score in my mother tongue would be much higher than this. And I'm actually so bold as to think that my score might be better than what many native speakers would get (although probably not anyone on this forum!) I think I was being sloppy with two of the questions actually, but on the other hand, part of the test could be that the skills are so solid that you don't have to stop and think, you know immediately and will not slip up for the smallest distraction... Well, now I have an idea what the goal post is, but it might be too ambitious. I'll have to set some intermediate goals. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I got 107 out of 120 and an estimate of 13000-something. I think your estimate depends on which ones you get wrong.
For anyone taking the test - beware, sometimes the site changes your answer, god knows what I did wrong with my keyboard while doing the test but I saw it doing it more than once and corrected them, but still got a few answers marked as wrong (even though I'd selected the right answer) because of this. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Estimated vocabulary size: 17380 Advanced level 10 s/word was the shortest time limit available but I don't think I averaged more than 5s per word. I don't know how much it helped that I had taken this test before, a couple of years back when we were discussing it in another thread. At least I didn't consciously remember any of the answers. I can see I still have glaring gaps in my vocabulary though, misassociating words like: indulge, pleated, grumpy, obtrusive, niggle (thinking of nibble instead), owlish, fledge, swot, fulsome, emetic and runt. Only one of the mistakes resulted from hurrying too much, when I read "wow" and associated it to "exclamation" when the word was actually vow. Wow Hencke, it's amazing that you are so good when you don't even live in an English speaking country!
Russianbear's score is impressive too because his starting point is a Slavic language with a different alphabet, so it was harder work for him. I found a Swedish vocabulary test, but it was poorly constructed so I dropped it. But I am NOT so sure my Swedish vocabulary is better than my English vocabulary. Maybe a little bit. My 'professional' vocabulary is definitely better in English but things like unusual household items would be words that I am more likely to know in Swedish. I stopped trying to develop my vocabulary in either language after university.. I am just an IT geek so nobody cares whether I am eloquent as long as the job gets done...
