I'm not sure if this is the right subforum to post in but I was curious as to which language has the most words per minute (if one speaks at a normal pace).

(To me, for instance, Spanish sounds as if one speaks mind-boggelingly quickly but for all I know the words are eight syllables long, which would lower the WPM significantly.)

I want to say that Korean is a good candidate for this since most words are only 1-2 syllables long, although the ends of sentences sometimes become long-winded. Most people seem to speak kind of fast compared to English, and I think the fact that Outsider can rap at 18 syllables a second and be somewhat understandable whereas an English rap that fast will be almost completely incomprehensible is evidence that Korean is easier to speak quickly.

But then again we have to measure what a "normal pace" is. For me about 7 words a second in English is "normal," but I often find myself going up to 10 or 11 in single-sentence bursts. I'll get back to you about Korean when I successfully rap 외톨이. :P

It probably averages out to be about the same plus or minus one or two words a seconds. I
don't think there is any language which is 'really fast' as we are all human and all have
to speak with what we have.

I heard from a University of Chicago linguist some time ago that Malayalam has the most
words per minute. Unfortunately, I don't have a citation for this "fact."
