I just recently started studying Russian as well, and I just wanted to drop a message to say THANKS for the link to the Princeton course materials! This is amazing.

I like Iversen's approach. After 5 years of studying Russian, I can tell you a lot of wasted time can happen...I didn't really learn well the first 4 years, I have advanced more the past year, than the entire first 4 years. What I would do, if I did it over again? Well...I did one thing right, learning cyrillic and learning to type in Russian right from the start. That has helped tremendously. But what I didn't do right...I didn't do enough brute force memorizing. The fact is, you have to start somewhere, you don't have a reference to begin with. You cannot build off your base of knowledge, without having a base. Last year I put 1500 words into a flash card memorization system and memorized them all. If I were to do it over again, I might start with 7500 words. Right from the start. And memorize more poems, songs, (even if you are so inclined, prayers). The first thing I memorized was the Lord's prayer. Russian words for deliver, temptation, forgive, debts....believe it or not, those are real words used in other connotations too...(I know I'm so surprised by what should be obvious)...I am now memorizing Pushkin's poems. Another link you might like: ruvr.ru ...Russian government now has 30 minute long audio programs for learning Russian. I like that Russian children memorized Pushkin in 1st grade, and now I will know as much as a first grader! It's not just language now, but a common cultural experience.

I also like my approach (please imagine a big grinning smiley here), but unfortunately I didn't quite follow my original plans. When I came back from Africa a couple of weeks ago I had reached the beginning of C and written around 20 pages of Russian words with all in all somewhere around 6000 words without even reaching the end of the alphabet. But I had not done the repetition once or twice afterwards that is an important part of my own recommandations. It would have been better to do half the number of words and then practice them according to the rules.

However I do get some repetition now where I spend at least a couple of hours daily on reading real stuff. Most times when I see a new word in Russian it reminds me of something in my wordlists, and even in those cases where I can't find the exact word in my dictionaries I can normally get by by cutting a prefix or applying some of the typical soundchanges. In another thread somebody discusses how many words you need to understand Russian. The fact I regularly see words that can't be found even in my best dictionaries with around 35.000 words each attests to the fact that you never can learn enough words. And then on top of that there are all those idiosyncratic idioms ...

I have found out that forums in Russian are easy compared to the GLOSS pages that I started out with, and they do contain a good deal of informal language.. Besides I have found some pedagogical editions of short stories in Russian with accents, - I appreciate that at my current level. So even though I didn't do those repetitions my studies in the dictionaries have proved their value.

Russian is a hard nut to crack, but it can be done.

My simple advice is go here:

http://www.princeton.edu/russian/

It is the material for two years of Russian as taught at Princeton University. It's free, and all shades of awesome. Something like 200 chapters. I've gone through the first 35, so I'm not sure how far it will take you...but I get the feeling that it's the most thing complete thing outside of DLI.

This link doesn't work anymore..pleas maybe somebody downlouded materials? or there is another link.. Thank you:)

Regular conversation with a tutor is necessary. I invite you to talk to me.
