I think the same thing happens in English, especially with the more traditional universities. People say that they're going to X to read Y. Though these days people say "do" or "study".
Regarding "hedder", that is the soft "d", which is the same as the "th" in English words such as "the", "then" and "there". Although a "v" sound isn't too far off, we have the correct sound in English so it's easy enough.
I like that Netdansk thing, as well as grammarexplorer.eu. The EU seems to have assisted with quite a few Danish language courses.
