Zdravstvuj vsem :D
I've decided to start this journal today so that I can keep on track how much I've done to improve my favorite language, Russian. For my Russian entries, I will use Cyrillic when I type from home and in Latin alphabet when I type from university. So I request to all Russian speakers out there, please feel free to correct my Russian Furthermore, English is my second language and there are always rooms for improvement. Therefore, Please also feel free to correct my English sentences if I make mistakes or my sentences sound "Weird" to you. Well... Let's think logically... I have repeatedly stated here that translation is not the way to go but it does help to see clearly in some situations. 'Здравствуй' is not equal to 'hello'. No matter what textbooks say. 'Здравствуй' actually stands for 'be healthy (imperative voice)'. So it's a verb. 'Всем' is most likely to be Dative case of 'все', so it literally is 'to all'. Now, 'be healthy (imperative) to all' doesn't seem to make sense grammatically even in English. What does seem to make sense? 'Здравствуйте, все', i.e. 'be healthy (imp plural), all [of you]' is much better. A comma would not be out of place, though, for obvious reasons. Going back to 'всем' and before we discard it completely, it is actually possible to say something like 'привет всем' or, more naturally, for reasons of emphasising the right topic, 'всем привет'. In this case, 'привет' being a noun can actually serve as an object followed by the Dative case and the full implied sentence is '[я передаю] всем привет'. And just to complete the exercise and give face to the original author, we can assume the original phrase to be highly elliptical: [-] Здравствуй! [- хочу сказать я] всем [и каждому в отдельности.] This is to illustrate that the key to formulating correct sentences in any language is actually in getting into the head of a native speaker and trying to see the world through his eyes... HAHAHAHA Damn My "Serbo-Croatian" syntax intereferes with my RUssian, AGAIN !!! LOLLL

For typing Cyrillic from the University, you can download Mozilla Firefox. They have a plugin that allows people to type in Russian from a non-Russian keyboard.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, 'pozdrav' is a noun and an equivalent of 'привет' so it fits perfectly into the logic outlined by me above. There isn't a huge difference between Russian and Serbo-Croatian on this level... 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||
