Hi everyone,
I just moved to Puerto Rico for my job and I'll be here for the next 5 months or so. Suffice to say, I think this is a fantastic opportunity for me to become proficient in Spanish. Right now I can manage to say "gracias" or "buenos dias," but beyond that I'm just a total gringo. :D
I have three choices for programs that fit my budget (i.e. available for free!). The first is FSI, and while I've had great luck with FSI Basic German in the past, the FSI website seems to only have the complete Programmatic Course. Has anyone had much luck with that? Looks very daunting and doesn't seem to be as conversational as the Basic Course I used previously.
The second is Pimsleur Levels I, II, and III. I've read threads on the Pimsleur courses on the forum and get the impression that it's not very thorough. It does seem to give basic conversational abilities though, which combined with the fact that I'm basically immersed in the language everyday, may have a good effect on my learning. Any thoughts on this?
The last one is Rosetta Stone Levels I and II, but I didn't really like the German version of it when I tried that before. I became very good at talking about boys jumping over tables, but didn't really get much conversational ability out of it.
So, between the three, keeping in mind that I live in PR, which would you choose?
Thanks!

My choice would be to combine Pimsleur with Rosetta Stone, that’s if I could only use the 3 Programmes you specified.
I had a look at the Programmatic FSI course and comparing it to the Basic course, it didn’t appeal to me at all.
Another option for you, which is also free, is Destinos which can be found here.

Pimsleur is great. I really like it, but keep in mind that it will not take you very far. You will get a basic idea of how grammar words, and you will learn a couple hundred words. Pimsleur is a great start, but you must go beyond that. I am about halfway through Level 3 in Spanish, so I will soon need to decide how to progress further. I will let you know which way I go then.

Michel Thomas would be good. Learn the grammar then go learn how to speak without worrying about grammar. You'll pick up vocab along the way, since you're in a Spanish speaking country.

Thanks everyone!
Yeah, one of the reasons I was somewhat leaning toward Pimsleur is because I could make up for the lack of vocab being that I'm immersed in the language already. The road signs, supermarkets, banks, dinner menus, etc. are all in Spanish, so I doubt that'll be a problem.
Michel Thomas doesn't look too bad but having just gone through a large move "free" is the best price for me. ;)
