I haven't read all the responses, but I'd just like to throw it out there that I'm a female language learner. I didn't even know there was a way to tell what gender the posters were...unless you just asked them.

Dear Kenski, first of all, thank you for increasing my Russian vocabulary! That is always appreciated. The reason no one tried to actually argue with you was that:
1) You were wildly off topic.
2) I've never been to Ukraine, so I know very little about how people act, behave and think over there, but your arguments had kind of the same authority for (at least) us silly northerners as going "White people are smart, black people are stupid". That means that what you said was just TOO stupid, too outrageous, for anyone to want to reply to it. There is that old saying, "argue with a...", but I won't go there, cause my intellectual mother actually succeeded in bringing me up to be somewhat polite :)
And finally, seen the delightful insults our sweet Kenski throws at us helpless ladies, shouldn't this warrant a ban on the guy?

Kenski, I can understand about 5% of your post.

“Take the banner? “ I don’t understand it, or the Russian (I can’t speak it). Fatter chances in a village: I haven’t an idea what’s it.

it is a well-known fact that women are probing their men. Why do they do it, why they put men into temptation when it is so harmful for them both? Maybe it is Eve's curiosity, but probably it is some dark ancient instinct, the necessity to get assured how much she can trust him or, better to say, wield him in case something bad happens. |

I don’t understand.

You hit women? In Belgium this is a crime.

What’s it mean?

Intellectual? If you mean 'prone to me intellectual' than it must have been 'prone to BE'. Isn't it clear? Typo. Yesterday it was the second day of Orthodox Easter. But if you are asking me 'Are you intellectual? Hahahaha!' – I answer 'Who is, then?' |
|

Yes it was clear that it was a mistake and it must be “be” and therefore you told that the men are intellectual but the women not. Therefore as well I asked if you’re intellectual (in your opinion) you aren’t at all in my opinion, but nasty and sexist, also violent.

I don’t understand. You’re in such a rage but if you were a women you wouldn’t be in a rage? Maybe xanax can help you.

And all that fuss about paedophilia or rush for Russian wives – isn't it symptomatic? Granted, we are still a beautiful nation, though gradually, as soviet education evaporates (which foreigners don't want to know), it is happens more and more seldom that the glance retains on a girl's face in the street. No, it isn't the faces they are looking for in foreign countries of in young girls. |

There’s much paedophilia in Russia? I don’t understand this paragraph.

Oh! A guy from England was talking in some forum (and gave a link to BBC, I imagine): not long ago police arrested a group of students somewhere in Siberia. They gave marriage announcements as Russian brides and after some time asked their correspondent for money. They invented various stories, but in majority of cases it was simply for buying a ticket to go to the bridegroom. As it usually happens, they became too impudent and reckless, gave different announcements by the same name, posted photos of famous Russian actresses and ballerinas and so on. The gist of the story is they collected an absolutely fabulous sum for this kind of swindle. Couple of million euros in a single year. I think, it is pathetic. Were your European men simply fools? Didn't they smell a rat? No, they paid for a dream, for fear to be deprived of hope. And such dreams are on your responsibility, babs. What you have done to your men? You henpecked them.
What strange tastes! |
|
|
“My European men”? who are those? I don’t know a person who gave some money to some Russians. Why my responsibility? I haven’t nothing to see with those things, I don’t know as well which things you refer. What’s “babs”? Which men ? I didn’t henpeck a person.
I think that you are absolutely muddle up. It’s possible you write a different person, not me because truly I don’t understand your post at all. I don’t reply you more. Bye.

In my opinion this forum ban the people who love the languages but don't ban the nasty ones. What a pity.

For what its worth, I don't think Kenski is nasty. Unlike most people in this thread, Kenski probably wasn't exposed to feminist thinking, so I don't know how fair it is to think of him as some kind of chauvinist. His views are quite mainstream in his cultural context, - in fact, I doubt that most his views are any diffrent from many, if not most people, in his country (except for hitting women - I think he may have been joking about that). The only reason you haven't heard from people like him more is because very few people in his country (and countries where people share a lot of his values) learn English well enough to be able to express his ideas on a forum like this one. Given all that, I don't think calling him names, telling him to shut up or requesting to ban him is a constructive way to handle it.

"Флаг тебе в руки" -literally smth. like "Take the banner"- is a Russian idiom, a sarcastic remark that means something like "good luck with that". Kenski has mistakenly thought it could be translated literally. As for the fatter chance
in a smaller village - even I don't know what that means.
