I'm female.

It's much easier to spend hours on intellectual pursuits if you have a wife cooking all your meals, washing your clothes, cleaning your house and looking after your kids for you.

In fact, women on average are more gifted in languages than men. Now, there might be more men polyglots than women, but that's because there are more deviations in men's race than in women's race, to both sides, which is reflected in other areas as well.

Ummmm, what?

Why are you rolling yor eyes? It's true. I'm not saying all men are lucky enough to be in this position, but many are. Whereas only extremely wealthy women have the luxury of being able to neglect the mundane things in life.

Why is that? It's true for a huge amount of women. I bet my mom would still speak four or five languages if she hadn't had two full time jobs (one at work, one at home) for the last 40 years ;)

I am a woman, I am polyglot and I am poor. So I manage to combine those. But I'm not tied up with family tasks.

I'm also poor, and I don't have a family either. But if I did I wouldn't be posting on this forum now, that's the point. How many of the women on this forum have children or old-school husband-caring responsibilities? I'll be extremely impressed if there's more than one.

Yes, Dark Sunshine, there's truth in your point, because when I compare myself with my sister and my sister-in-law who are both married with small children and having part-time jobs, it is very obvious that they couldn't develop any intellectual endeavours like I can.
