First I want to say thanks for not "hijaking my thread", I appreciate it. Besides, it will probably be of real use to someone so it's great that it has its own place.

One thing that I thought of when reading your post was that it would probably matter who you decided to be with as well. Maybe two gay men who were tourists together might not be a dangerous situation, but if you were living there it probably would not be good to get involved in a local scene. Your post immediately made me think of a news article I read where a man in Pakistan who went to a local place for homosexual men was robbed and threatened.

Wanting to know if this was common in other places, like the Middle East I researched a bit more and found this site for you.The link below will take you to a specific article but the site is very extensive and I don't doubt would help you find some resources. Good luck! ;)

Like anywhere, it is more accepted in the bigger cities, but even in Sendai (nearest large city) a penetrable gay scene seemed to be lacking.

I'll never understand why some people need a "gay scene". I'm perfectly happy if a gay scene doesn't exists. I even find it preferable. Why do you need a "scene" to be what you are? This is again something limited to the west. Being oppressed so long people feel it is important to be flamboyantly gay.

What really matters is what people think deep down inside. If they feel a sense of superiority because they're "straight" and you are gay, then that's an unfortunate state of affairs. If they think you can do what you want and it is your business, then that's perfect and that's right.

The stupid scene has nothing to do with it.

Sennin,

I personally do not need a "gay scene" to survive either and in fact am quite averse to it. The reason I was illustrating this point, was that people struggling with their sexuality tend to benefit from it at one point in their life or other. Furthermore, if you are feeling lost and alone in a country with a completely alien culture; away from your family and friends and have not (knowingly) met another gay person, it can be nice to have that option. That was all I was meaning. if you are being constantly bombarded with questions about a "girlfriend" or being set up on dates with local village women and there doesn't seem to be any other gay ALT's, it could be nice to relax with people who can empathise with your situation.

Ok, I see. I guess you are right, the scene could play a positive role in a way. Unfortunately, it also creates a stereotypical image, which I'm sure a lot of people hate, gay and straight alike.

By the way.. When you say you are being set on dates with local village women, are you referring to Japan? Is this a fact or just a hypothetical argument? ;) I'm curious.

Yeah, I agree with you on this point too.

This did happen to me on two occasions! I couldn't believe it. One of them was one of my adult conversation class pupils, who told me she was 25. After it didn't work out as planned, she got married to a friend of her family and the fact that she was actually 35 came out to me!

With regards to countries with strict anti-homosexuality laws... they've mostly all got strict fornication laws too -- no-one who's not married is supposed to be "at it", so it's not always as discriminatory as it first seems.... ;-)

I suggest that you purchase this book. It contains 1250 pages of information including the laws and attitudes of different countries toward homosexuality:

Thanks everybody, you've been really helpful. Just one more thing, does anyone have any information on Latin America and Spain?
