I like Romance languages because the have brought me a fair amount of "romance" in my travels. I like German too. I think Russian and most Slavic languages sound interesting. Hindi and Urdu are very interesting as is well-spoken, Modern Standard Arabic, at least to my ear.

Having studied Mandarin, my ear isnow accustomed to it and it actually sounds softer and more soothing than other Chinese dialects with sharper tones.

But I don't like sound of Tagalog, or most of the languages of Indochina: Vietnamese, Lao, Cambodian, and Burmese I think they are all (or mostly all tonal languages) and the tones have an almost percussive sound that fatigues me to listen to them. That might change if I knew more about them. I thought Chinese was hard to listen to before I studied Mandarin.

I love the Romance languages, but I do agree that it's tiresome to learn a lot of them. I've studied French, Latin
and Italian, and want to learn Spanish and Portuguese, but they are both SO similar to the others that I'm having
problems motivating myself. But wouldn't it be tiresome to learn a lot of languages from any given family? The
problem with the Romance family is that so many of them are so useful.

The Slavic languages sound beautiful to me, and I've always wanted to learn one (mostly Russian), but their
grammars seem unnecessarily complicated/irregular and the Cyrillic alphabet is a bit gaudy. I ended up
disappointingly disliking the language family after studying in it for a while.

I also dislike the Semitic, Indo-Iranian and Sino-Tibetan language families. The languages of the first two sound
angry and frightening and those of the last one sound irritating. There's nothing worse after a long day at work
than sitting on a bus in front of two teenage girls speaking Cantonese!! (which happens to me on a weekly basis
here in Canada). And as with the Slavic family, it's a shame I don't like them, since they all have a variety of
beautiful scripts and fascinating cultures.

Romance languages. Too easy. Not exotic enough. It's like learning to play the recorder versus learning to play the piano. I did Spanish at uni but am starting to forget it because it is not very useful here in Australia. I still want to learn French and Italian though. I don't hate the languages I just don't find them as exciting as say Modern Greek. I think this applies to English speakers more than it does to speakers of other languages. I'm sure a Mandarin speaker would find Romance languages to be very exotic and different.

I agree with the threadstarter, I absolutely LOVE the sound of Arabic, Korean, Japanese, Mandarin and Thai.(among others.) It's nice to type/read/speak in Romance languages but they are pretty "boring" compared to others.
