I learned to speak German in Berlin. Big mistake.
It was like a German coming to the United States and learning English in The Bronx or South Boston.

Really? I would have compared it to a city like New York, because there are so many people from all over the world. By the way, the Berlin accent doesn't really have a stigma attached to it; it's distinctive but relatively neutral.

When I returned to Germany a few years later my time was split between Darmstadt and Augsburg. I found the German spoken in the Augsburg/Munich area much more pleasant to the ear.

Now the Bavarian accent in Augsburg/Munich is definitely quite different from Standard German, and you'll find quite a lot of German speakers who'll find it unpleasant. But of course it's all a matter of taste and de gustibus non disputandum est.

Studying German in the 1980s in West Germany, I was sometimes frustrated by Germans preferring to speak to me in English. One exception was one guy (less educated than the others I encountered) who spoke no English, but unfortunately he didn't really speak standard Hochdeutsch either, just a Saarland dialect I had real trouble following.
