Chinese in "Firefly" was cool and if I had been a less rational person I would have rushed out to buy a Chinese book after that! I agree it was criminal to cancel that series.
I have no really embarrasing reason that I can think of - although my crush on a Spanish guy at 14 sure made me learn Spanish a lot faster than I probably would have otherwise. As a kid I really liked Russian because I watched some Russian kids' films which happened to be about topics that interested me, like space travel, time travel and technology! Another reason I liked Russian was that Russian folk music was incredibly beautiful - it tends to be sweet and melancholic at the same time. I was in a choir and we sang quite a few different Russian folksongs and childrens song. Later I retained my interest because I was into chess and the chess magazine that I was subscribing to had a strong focus on Russian speaking areas. I temporarily lost my interest after I had trouble learning Russian in school, and Russia had a chaotic time in the 90s - we heard nothing but bad news.
