I wonder if other members are fans of the Jason Bourne movies. Over at IMDB they are saying Matt Damon is filming a new Bourne movie. I bring this up in a language forum because it is fun to watch Bourne in different nations, speaking the local language fluently (I don't know German, so I can't say how fluent it was, but it sounded like German to my ears). Whenever I watch his movies, I get the urge to start studying a new language.

The Bourne movies aren't bad. :) I do appreciate the realistic linguistic
portrayal in those films, and Matt Damon's skills seem pretty good.

I hate spy flicks and TV shows (like Alias, ugh) where everyone just speaks
English with corny accents, since the producers couldn't be bothered to hire
multilingual writers and actors or produce realistic stories.

I watched The Talented Mr. Ripley the other night (also starring
Damon), and as a linguaphile, I enjoyed noticing how the Italian-speaking
skills of the main characters progressed during the movie — i.e. they were
all learning the language in "actual life", even though you never saw it on-
screen. Nice touch of realism there! I'm sure most viewers wouldn't even
have noticed.

For anyone who hasn't seen the movies, the first (Bourne Identity) has Italian, French, and German. The second (Bourne Supremacy) is mainly German and Russian.

I also agree with everthing Magnum has to say; it's rare for movies made for an American audience to have much foreign language dialogue. If you only watched older American movies, you would think that a foreign accent is all that is necessary to speak with foreigners.

I LOVE these movies. I just got the two of them as part of my Christmas present from my wife last Dec. One of the greatest parts of the movies is hearing him speak whichever language it is with ease. It really gave me motivation to learn more and better...so that maybe one day when I have to flee America I won't be spotted as a foreigner in the country I'm in. lol

I started a thread a long time ago about how motivating the Bourne Identity and other spy movies can be. I also mentioned a movie called Boondock Saints in which the two main characters speak six or seven languages. Boondock Saints was the first movie that showed me that speaking many languages is "cool", although I realize now that the characters had only intermediate levels in their languages.

As for Alias, the main characters (Sydney and Vaughn) speak many, many languages throughout the course the show, and usually their pronunciation is quite good, although I can't say for sure for languages I'm not familiar with. The actor who plays Vaughn happens to be a native speaker of French, and he can pass in Italian too. They often go out of their way to show him speaking these languages. Other languages I've seen on Alias include German, Russian, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese, Hebrew, Arabic, and Thai.

I have read the first two in the series. “The Bourne Identity” by Ludlum was a real page-turner. Once I started reading it I could not put the book down. It is an excellent book for those who are looking for something to read.

BTW, the plot is different enough from the movie to hold your suspense.

I've read all four in English and the first two in French as well. The first one is by far the best of the lot - the last (the Bourne Legacy) was a continuation of the story by Eric van Lustbader rather than Robert Ludlum but was better than Ludlum's third (the Bourne Ultimatum).

I don't often enjoy films that stray too far from a book's origins but I have to say that the two Matt Damon film's are amongst the best I've seen in the thriller/spy genre.

Andy.
