This thread could turn into a general list, so I didn't specifically put MY desired languages in the title.
My question is: are there any high school-age (13-18) programmes for exchange that have financial aid so a teenager could actually afford them?
I, myself, would LOVE to get a chance to go to Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, or any other Spanish-speaking country and/or Russia. I would very much enjoy furthering my cultural and linguistic learnings of Russian and Spanish.
My dilemma: My family is not of the wealthier persuasion. That is not to say we are dirt poor, but the majority of exchange programmes (even the 3-month, host family, ~$4k USD ones) are too expensive for us. Consequently, I am searching for a programme which offers financial aid to eager learners like me who may not be able to afford the cost.
Does anyone know of and/or have experience with a programme of this type? I would especially appreciate someone who has had firsthand experience with the programme's financial aid.
Thanks in advance,
Sam

I know this is an old thread, but a lot of exchang programs offer scholarships. Overall, the cheapest program is generally Rotary. For the most part, all you have to pay for is your plane ticket and any dues for orientations before you go an so forth. Other more expensive programs like AFS, ASSE, and YFU among other offer scholarships.
Actually, now that I think of it, there are actually a few US State Dept. funded hisgh school exchanges. They are totally covered, but have few spots, so they;re very competitive. Check out CBXY (Germany), YES (African and Arab countries), and NSLI-Y (S.Korea, China, Egypt, and critical language countries.
If you don't get a scholarship etc, fundraising can help you get funds. Check out www.cultures-shocked.org/forum for a wealth of info.
