Does anyone know what the officially recognised and well known certificates for German are?
(I want to investigate, pick one of the easiest and set passing that as my intermediate goal... )

Hi Cordelia,
The most well known and recognized are probably the certificates of the Goethe Institute:
http://www.goethe.de/lrn/prf/enindex.htm
They have certificates for all levels, plus business German. It is possible to sit the exams outside of Germany.
TestDaf is also pretty well known. http://www.testdaf.de/
Good luck!

Thanks for that - I should have worked that out myself actually but it just slipped my mind! I'll definitely aim for the first level there!

Yes, indeed. Goethe Institut offers the well-known
"Kleines Sprachdiplom"
"Großes Sprachdiplom"

The Goethe Institut´s exam´s absolutely the most prestigious and you find a plenty of preparation material out there, as well as exam preparation courses.
Good luck! :)

Hello. In relation to the Kleines Deutsches Sprachdiplom and its big brother the Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom, I would recommend the (admittedly expensive) Goethe-Institut preparation courses.
The reason for this is partly that the teachers know the requirements; some of the sub-tests can be completed almost formulaically if you know what the examiners want to see, but also, you get to have some input into the choice of unseen oral topics if you are a G-I student. Some may see that as corrupt, but it's the way things are: if you want the piece of paper, your chances are better with a G-I course.
The level is quite high, too: the GDS is one of the few certificates around generally acknowledged as being of higher than C2 level. The KDS is at C2 level, but even so, there is another C2-level exam that's generally considered to be lower in status: the Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung, which may have changed its name recently.
