Well, whew, I have done it now. I sat for the HSK Basic level exam a couple of weeks back, on May 30th.
The test was quite challenging for my current level of knowledge, especially the time limit for the last, reading comprehension part, where for a few of the questions towards the end, I was running out of time and had to just jot down whatever, without even reading the text.
Purely by the way it "feels" I think I might have about a fifty-fifty chance of passing. I am not worried about it really, as I knew beforehand that my level was perhaps not quite up to it just yet. I just wanted to try and see what it was like and it was a valuable experience in that sense.
The answers have been sent off to China for correction and the results are not expected until after another month and a half according to what we were told, but I am checking the website for results every other day even so :o).

When I took HSK I expected the results to be available only after months, like with JLPT. But the date on my certificate is exactly a month later than the day of the exam, so I think you should see your results online soon. It may be a bit more time until your certificate arrives.

What does one consider to be the most effective method to prepare for the basic or elementary level for the HSK?
I have some preparation books from China, and can't even seem to understand the instructions!
Thank you.

Well, it´s not that hard to understand the instructions, there are even pictures. But if you don´t, then you should take the time to go through them with a dictionary. As to the questions, when I was preparing for the Basic HSK I knew enough grammar, but my vocab was not that big. All you can do is looking them up in the dictionary. It is really time-consuming if you have only a printed one and you can only rely on radicals, but if you have an e-dict with handwriting recognition, it will much faster. If don´t, another similar option is using nciku.com. If only I had known about Nciku when I was looking up all those words!

It's been just over a month since the exam now, and still no results on the webpage. However much I try to stress it into submission by checking back several times a day, I am still met by the same dull greeting every time: 成绩尚未公布,请等待!!
等待 等待 等待 ! Well I already have ! I have been doing so much 等待 that one would think enough's enough already. Please - even if it's to face the bitter and inevitable truth of having failed - I just can't suffer the uncertainty any longer. I want to know the result ! NOW !
