I took Spanish classes for a month with FairPlay in Cusco, Peru. I can;t really begin to talk about how much I
appreciate this program. I learned much more than Spanish. I've gained so many friends from all around the
world and became part of the Peruvian culture. Cusco was a surprise to me. It was such a fantastic city, with a
lot to offer besides the obvious way onto
Machu Picchu. The Spanish in Peru is very good. For the most part, people speak clearly and at a good pace.
There are some interesting words from Qechua that are mixed in once in a while
Fairplay is a unique non profit organization in that one of their main aims is to help single mothers of Peru.
Almost all of the Spanish teachers are single mothers and they are paid directly by the students.
They also have homestays with peruvian families and free volunteer opportunities. Thats how I found out about
Fairplay. I was looking for volunteer programs that were free because there are so many that make volunteers
pay. I thought, how ridiculous is that, that a person must pay to volunteer their time. Through Fairplay I ended
up volunteering at CORASON and later I worked on a small documentary for Fairplay.
Spanish classes usually run for 4 hours a day. 2 hours of grammar and 2 hours of practice. They are 1 on 1,
completely taught in Spanish and are customized to the student's level. The cost ranges from $6-$8 per hour.
Other activities, which are a lot of fun, are the peruvian cooking classes on wednesdays and volleyball games on
saturdays. I believe they will be adding a game night to have everyone practicing Spanish.
