Are you sure?

Mandarin has lost so many features of Chinese language.
You speak Mandarin and you know that it doesn't have ptk at the back, which other
Chinese languages have this feature, and it is the only Chinese language that has retroflex
consonant.

I am hesitant to agree with you because a mere anecdote is far from being enough to make such a serious conclusion. The logic is rather slim.

My speaking native Madarin is also far from being enough for me to make a solid argument.

About the middle of 1600s, the Manchu people (who defeated Ming dynasty of Han people, took control of China, and founded Qing dynasty) started the emigration over Shanhaiguan into former Han area in a large number. I have read The Red Mansion Dreams written by a person who lived about the first half of 1700s. From the novel, one can easily perceive the conversations were tinted with Manchu spoken vocabulary and expressions.   So one can not deny the oral language influence from Manchu people during its 400 years' political control. However, as some researchers have pointed out, Hanyu (contemporary spoken Chinese) had far more, ever decisive influence on Manchus rather than the other way around.

I am on the side of these two blogs (in Chinese):

To keep the balance, here is another point of view which is akin to pkany's.

" Mandarin is simply what is most accessible and useful "
It is useful in the area of jobs in nowadays China but not as useful in studying culture of China and surrounding regions. The CULTURAL value of Mandarin is less than other Chinese languages. Now it gets dominant status because the government are doing
linguocide to every other Chinese languages.

How do you define "Mandarin"? For me, it is living language. Without it, I would starve physically, emotionally and culturally. And it never stops me from enjoying other Chinese dialects.

Yes, it always puzzles me how some of the most basic kanji vocabulary in Japanese aren't used in Mandarin. So you
do use "食" to mean "eat" in other Chinese languages?

Why is Mandarin and its dialects lost the final ptk much much earlier than the others?? Why is it the only Chinese language that has retroflex
consonants, like the Mongolian and Russian? You can't deny the influence of the Northern tribes.

Too many whys... It is normal that languages are changing, no matter you like it or not. Languages are different from mathematics and physics.

Mandarin is a tool of language suppression. That's all. It is a tool made widespread by KMT and CPC to control people's thinking.

Mandarin had been in a widespread use handreds of years before the existence of KMT and CPC. Read the conversations in Red Mansion Dreams.

Mandarin severely restricts the choice of vocabularies in writing. For example, if I want to write "to drink", I can't write "飲" and I have to write "喝";if I want to write "to eat", I can't write "食" but have to write "吃";if I want to write "one day" , I can't use "一日"" but have to use "一天". Why can't people use whatever word they want ?
Because they would be criticized for "writing Cantonese". The Japanese learners maybe amazed by the idea that "食", "飲" and "日" aren't "proper usage" in Chinese writing.

Quite on the contrary. I fabricated the following sentences like a pupil doing his homework. I certainly would not speak likewise to vegetable vendors, but they show the speaking style of me and many of my acquaintances. I would use the words you complained about quite often in my daily life, they do not sound weird at all.

这些天,我饮食无度,又胖了几斤。

自从他失恋之后,每天食不知味,情绪低落。

来,老同学,几十年不见,咱们先痛饮三杯, 然后好好聊聊,不醉不归,啊!

自从我买了彩票以后,日思夜想中大奖。

嘿,小子,前天咱们玩儿乒乓球,我还把你打 得落花流水,今天你居然连赢我三局,真是“ 一日不见,当刮目相看”啊!

But I think there're a few ways to pronounce 摂 for someone's name.
Take http://www.ufpress.jp/member/setsumori/index.htm for example,
his name is Mori Setsu. It really depends on what his parents decide
to call him...

Yep, it is indeed おさむ. I have yet to hear a Japanese person pronounce his name
correctly first time so allow yourself a big head for the day mate.
