In his interview on Russian TV he said he could speak 15 languages and read 40. He said he had studied most of his languages at school. His son George is also a linguist and on the side he has an extensive music review site

I don't think he updates the review site much any more but for music lovers it is a
fantastic resource, and one can only be in awe of his extraordinary grasp of the English
language.

I've been more interested in the late Mr. Starostin's work on long-range etymology with other linguists for some time now, but it's nice to see him speak about something other than etymology.
