Season as metonym for year

In English I think I've mostly seen spring and summer used to represent years, e.g. in
the construction "many summers passed."

In Sanskrit, sharat, which is more or less equivalent to English autumn (though more
pleasant, I'm told), is used.

How does this occur in other languages? Is there any rationale for which is chosen?
