Maria Tănase - Lume, Lume
The web translations I found don't seem to be that great... For instance, the title is translated as "World, World," while the CD that someone brought me from Romania has "Life, oh Life"... A friend of mine tried to translate it, but it ended up being a personal interpretation. I can try to translate it myself too, but I want a translation that retains the original meaning and feel.
Here are the lyrics:
Lume, lume, soră lume
Lume, lume, soră lume
Când să mă satur de tine
Când să mă satur de tine
Lume, soră lume
Când s-o lăsa sec de pâine
Şi păhăruţul de mine
Poate-atunci m-oi sătura
Poate-atunci m-oi sătura
Când o suna scândura
Când o suna scândura
Lume, soră lume
Când m-or băga in mormânt
Şi n-oi mai fi pe pământ
Lume, soră lume
Aşa-i lumea trecătoare
C-aşa-i lumea trecătoare
Unul naşte altul moare
Unul naşte altul moare
Lume, soră lume
Ăl de naşte necăjeşte
Ăl de moare putrezeşte
Lume, soră lume
C-aşa-i lumea trecătoare
Unul naşte altul moare
Lume, soră lume
Ăl de naşte necăjeşte
Ăl de moare putrezeşte
Lume, soră lume

World*, world, sister world
World, world, sister world
When I get tired of you
When I get tired of you
World, sister world
When leaving a dry bread
And my little (liquour) glass
Maybe then I'll get fed up
Maybe then I'll get fed up
When a sound 'scans'**
When a sound 'scans'
World, sister world
When they'll put me in the grave
And I'll not be anymore on the earth
World, sister world
Thus the world is transient
It's like that, the transient world
One is born, another dies
One is born, another dies
World, sister world
At birth (it) annoys**
At dying (it) rots
World, sister world
It's like that, the transient world
One is born, another dies
World, sister world
At birth (it) annoys
At dying (it) rots
World, sister world
* "lumea" first and foremost means 'the world', but it can also means 'people' (in general)
** to 'scan' like when you recite a poem - but 'suna' is often used about ring tones and bells, so the meaning could be "when the bells toll"
*** obscure, but probably meaning something like
"the one who is (at) being born, it annoys
the one who is (at) dying, it (lets) rot"
