Hello everyone,

I wasn't sure in which forum to post this question.

I'm in the US and would like to keep up some exposure to the German language. We've tried to find a TV service
where we can access German TV but haven't actually found one in our area -- the international channels available
to us are almost exclusively in languages not among our 'targets' and it's extremely expensive as well.

An acquaintance mentioned this morning that we might find German TV streaming or archived on the web. I've
searched, but what I've been able to find so far have been film trailers.

Can anyone recommend a free, or at least relatively inexpensive, online resource for German television? Or
movies? (We do have netflix online, but they have relatively few flims in German and we've watched them all
several times already.)

Thanks very much for any recommendations!

I'm sure your cable TV provider offers Deutsche Welle. I have it in Mexico (the Latin
American service). I can't remember well but I think I used to have it when I lived in
the US. If you're trying to practice you listening skills I'd recommend you check out
the DW website. They have literally hundreds of vides together with their transcriptions
so you can listen and read at the same time. I've also been watching a German soap opera
with English subtitles called "Verbotene Liebe" or "Chris und Olli"... it's a gay soap
opera but very funny and interesting.

http://www.myspass.de - This is a website that hosts a lot of German shows. 'Stromberg'
is pretty funny -- it's Germany's version of 'The Office'. 'Elton reist' is another
pretty hilarious show.

If you're looking for more of a 'Tonight Show' type of thing then 'TV Total' is what
you're after.

These other links are channels that are in plenty of other languages and consist mostly
of live streaming news stations.

If you have an iPod you could get the ARD Tagesschau app and watch their broadcasts
there as well.

If you'd like to check out YouTube then you should go to the ARD and ZDF channels.

That should tide you over for now.

You can watch German TV for free on www.zattoo.com. You just have to register with your e-mail address.

There is a service of ZDF (= Zweites Deutsches Fernsehen) that you can watch programs which have been broadcasted as videos. This website is called "ZDF Mediathek".

ZDF Mediathek

Also ARD (= Allgemeine Rundfunkanstalten Deutschlands) has such a possibility to watch broadcasted programs as videos.

ARD Mediathek

These are great! Thank you!
Kualidu, I've been listening to Deutsche Welle and other streaming audio, but it hadn't occurred to me they had
videos there as well.

I'll be checking all of these out. Thanks everyone!

I second the "Chris und Olli" storyline from "Verbotene Liebe" – I adore them. :) You can find all the videos for their storyline on YouTube if you search for "chrolli".

ETA: Including with English subs!
